We’ve received a lot of feedback lately regarding searching and how to find the search options in HeinOnline. Therefore, we thought we would take a moment to explain how to navigate to the search options from the Welcome Screen. After you log in to HeinOnline, your starting point is the Welcome Page which lists all of the libraries that you are subscribed and have access to. Below are the steps to follow to navigate to the Search Options. We’ve also outlined what the options are.

Looking for a public law number in HeinOnline? Conduct a search in the U.S. Statutes at Large library using one or several of the following attributes: the public law number, the title of the public law, citation to the U.S. Code, and/or a bill number. NOTE: The U.S. Statutes at Large library contains contains content through 2009, the 111th Congress.

For our examples, we will focus on Public Law 106-168 of the 106th Congress, titled “Deceptive Mail Prevention and Enforcement Act”. This appears in Statutes at Large on Dec. 12, 1999 and references Bill Number S. 335. Open the U.S. Statutes at Large library and click on the Search tab at the top of the page. Or do you want to find references to that term on pages directly preceding or following a specific page? Here are a few examples of building a search query to find a phrase on a specific day and a specific page in the Federal Register, using both the Field and Advanced Search options.

Many of you have requested the ability to search within a specific article within a Journal or within a specific section of a document. We are currently working in development to be able to offer this functionality in the future. In the meantime, here’s one method or way that you can try in order to achieve this type of search. The general approach involves searching for an exact article title within a collection, narrowing your results to one and then searching within that result for a term or phrase. The approach will vary by library as each library in HeinOnline is indexed differently, thus altering the method of finding an article or section title. Have you ever found yourself spending too much time going back and forth to the printer? You sit down, find the first article you're looking for, click print and then get up to go retrieve it. You come back, find another article, hit print, get up to go retrieve it, come back and so on. Or, have you ever simply wanted to print 2 or 3 articles at one time? If either of these applies to you, then you may find this shortcut helpful!

Congressional Record Daily to Bound Volumes – Browse by month now available!

Several of you have found the Congressional Record Daily to Bound Locator tool extremely helpful when looking for a page from the Daily edition in the Bound volume or vice versa. We have now added an additional function to this tool that allows you to browse the Congressional Record Daily and Bound Volumes by month and year.

This tool is available in the U.S. Congressional Documents collection under the Congressional Record Daily to Bound Locator tool.

Select a month and a year from the drop down menus and click browse. This will generate a table of results that displays the citation (a direct link) to each section of the Daily and Bound volumes for each day of the chosen month…

New! Browse all Titles in HeinOnline via Title Lookup

Now you can browse all titles that are available in HeinOnline with an A to Z index. This browsing capability can be accessed from the Title Lookup tab in HeinOnline or via Title Lookup from the HeinOnline home page. Select a letter from A to Z and an alphabetical list of titles will be generated.


Each title displays the HeinOnline collection within which the titles resides. Both the title and the collection names are direct links to the subsequent location in HeinOnline. You may only access the full text version of the titles that coincide with your subscription. HeinOnline's Tip of the Week: What is an external section type?

When conducting a field or advanced search in the Law Journals Library, by default External is selected as a section type to search across. Thus, when conducting a Title or Author search across all default section types in the Journals library, you may get results that are listed as [external]. So, what exactly is an External section type?


The External section type contains links to law review articles that do not reside inside the HeinOnline database. These are electronically published law review articles, usually not distributed in print format and only made available online via the web. New Printing Options Now Available!

We have received a lot of feedback from the HeinOnline Community over the past month or so about printing/downloading PDF's, cutting and pasting text, and choosing which pages you wish to print. We are pleased to announce that we have implemented changes to the print options to enable you to do those things you couldn't do before!

We are now giving you the ability to print pages across multiple sections, using a Custom Page Range tool. Using drop-down menus you can select any page range in the title provided you are within the specified printing limits. There are two limitations or conditions place on custom printing. First, the printing limitation is set to a maximum of 200 pages per download…
