We recently added Labour Law Documents (1919-1995, All Published) to the Foreign & International Law Resources Database (FILRD) in HeinOnline. Published by the International Labour Office (ILO), Labour Law Documents was originally founded in 1919 as the Legislative Series. The documents found within this set include legislation and treaties relevant to labour and social security from countries all over the world. Each document within this collection has been indexed with the corresponding country name, thus making it possible to search across all Labour Law Documents from a given country.
As we have done with previous posts that outline searching techniques, we will begin by looking briefly at the Table of Contents for a volume in the Labour Law Documents set. Therefore, from the FILRD collection home page, scroll down through the list of titles to Labour Law Documents. Click on the title and open the 1993 volume. In looking at the Table of Contents we can identify the “Title” of each section in the volume, which in this case is the country name. This allows us to search for a country name across the title field when building our search.
Now, let’s take a look at an example to illustrate how you can search for labour laws within a specific country. We want to find labour laws discussing the minimum wage in British Columbia in Canada. From within FILRD in HeinOnline, click on the search tab in the upper left hand corner. Then click on Advanced Search. Enter Canada into the first search box and select Title from the drop down menu. Then enter “minimum wage” into the second search box and select Text from the drop down menu. Enter “British Columbia” into the last search box and select Text from the drop down menu. Then, select “Lab. L. Doc.” from the title listing and click search.
This will return several results. If we wanted to narrow our dates, we could click on “Modify Your Search” and add a begin and end year, such as 1968. This would return only 1 result to documents that discuss minimum wage in British Columbia.
If you want to search across multiple countries at a time, you can build your search using the Advanced Search tool. Let’s look at an example. We want to find labour laws from France, Spain, or Germany that discuss Occupational Safety in Mining. Click on the search tab and then click on Advanced Search. Enter the following search string into the first box, changing the drop-down to title and enter Spain OR France OR Germany. In the next box, change the drop-town to text and enter “occupational safety” AND mining.
Select Lab. L. Doc. from the title listing and click search.
This will return results that discuss occupational safety in mining from France, Spain and Germany.
