We are pleased to announce that World Constitutions Illustrated is now available as an a-la-carte library in HeinOnline. With the release of this library we are introducing a new legal research platform that brings together constitutional documents, books, articles, bibliographic references, and web sites all into one database. It offers a different scope than what’s already out there for researchers studying constitutional law and political science.
The initial release includes the current constitution for every country (193 countries) and substantial constitutional hierarchies for the United Kingdom, France, Brazil and Colombia.
Every country includes:
- The current constitution in its original language format
- Links to commentaries and other relevant sources such as the World Fact Book, Annual Human Rights Reports Submitted to Congress by the U.S. Department of State, and Country Studies
- Direct links to specific chapters within the 800 classic constitutional books that discuss the country
- Links to scholarly articles that discuss the constitutional and political development of the country
- A bibliography of other select constitutional books about the constitutional development or the history of the government
- Links to online sources such as the Portals of the World and the official government website for the country
In addition to the four substantial constitutional hierarchies that we have built for the United Kingdom, France, Brazil and Colombia, we have connected thousands of other historical constitutional documents from the British & Foreign State Papers, Peaslee’s Constitutions of Nations, Dodd’s Modern Constitutions, and other sources.
The initial release will allow you to link to hundreds of historical constitutions from within these resources at the country level. As we continue to develop the library, we will convert every link to a constitutional document allowing you to view and search by key information including the promulgated date, document source or location, language of origin, or date.
This collection features for the first time in an online digital format the complete set of the British & Foreign State Papers, one of the greatest collections of legal and political documents ever published. The collection also includes more than 800 classic constitutional books from some of the greatest legal minds in history, including Aristotle, Francis Bacon, Max Farrand, Henry Hallam, Karl Marx, Thomas Paine, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and many more!
The initial release of this library is only the framework for this project. We will be continually adding constitutional documents, books, periodicals, articles, and links to expand the constitutional timeline for every country. Just like we did with the Law Journal Library ten years ago, we want to partner with libraries from all over the world to build the greatest collection of constitutions and constitutional resources. If you have a book, constitutional document, or suggestion for an article, or if you specialize in the constitutional law of a specific country or have access to a foreign law collection, we invite you to contribute to the project. Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or click on the “Be a Contributor” link from within the collection.
