Use Proximity Searching to Research this Subject in HeinOnline

To conduct a proximity search you will first need to identify key search terms. So, if we want to find articles that discuss the impact of Obama’s College Affordability plan on the middle class, our key terms could be: Obama, affordability, middle class, college, education, resources. Two examples of proximity searches we could perform with these terms are as follows:

Example 1 – text: “obama education affordable”~15 OR title: “obama education affordable”~15
Example 2 – text:“obama middle class education”~30 OR title: “obama middle class education”~15

Since we are looking for articles, this search would be performed in the advanced search box in HeinOnline's Law Journal Library.

These queries will look for content that meets either of the above criteria. Example 1 will return results for documents that contain the terms obama, education, affordable in the text of the documents within 15 words of each other; or, it will return results for documents that contain those three terms in the title of the document within 15 words of each other. Example 2 will return results for documents that contain the terms obama middle class education in the text of the documents within 30 words of each other; or, it will return results for documents that contain those three terms in the title of the document within 15 words of each other.

For both examples, if it finds content that meets both criteria, the content is given a higher relevancy and placed higher on the search results list.
