You are probably already familiar with our updated interface, released this past August. The appearance is cleaner, the search bar is stationary, and HeinOnline is now much more mobile-friendly. However, despite our desire to upgrade our look and usability factor, we know that it's what's inside that really matters.
That's why, in addition to these searching enhancements made earlier in the year, we have also considerably increased the speed of certain aspects of HeinOnline where it counts.
Page turning is now remarkably fast, thanks to our development team's thoughtful wizardry. In order to achieve optimum speed, the user's browser now caches the page images, when previously the images were not being stored. Additionally, the process that enables the highlighting of those helpful inline hyperlinks was separated from the page loading process, enabling the image to load first, followed by the highlighting. While users may not notice the slight delay in the appearance of the highlighting, the speed at which pages turn and display is readily apparent! Page through this article to get an idea of the increase in speed using the arrow keys on the keyboard or the page turner tool located here:
The HeinOnline Welcome Page and collection homepage title lists also display more efficiently, thanks to using the HeinOnline database to retrieve certain information points.
In laymen's terms, our development team has prioritized image loading, reconfigured key data retrieval methods, and optimized the use of the latest available caching technologies. We have received a good deal of positive feedback about both the improved speed and enhanced interface. One customer wrote:
I am impressed with all of the upgrades to the look AND search response time....One more improvement I really like: the persistent search bar on top of the page. Having this tabbed search bar always available has made my life as a librarian much easier. So kudos, compliments, and many thanks.
Of course, we aren't done yet — stay tuned for news of additional functionality and content enhancements!
