Subject Compilations of State Laws: May's Featured Library

Exploring HeinOnline, Subject Compilations of State Laws, What's New
Shannon Sabo

Subject Compilations of State Laws by Cheryl Rae Nyberg has long been recognized as the most comprehensive source for identifying thousands of articles, books, government and loose-leaf publications, court opinions, and websites that compare state laws on hundreds of subjects. The first volume, which was compiled by Lynn Foster and Carol Boast, won the AALL Joseph L. Andrews Bibliographical Award in 1982. The print version is typically updated annually, with the database updated more frequently throughout the year.

Since 2008, Subject Compilations of State Laws has been available in HeinOnline, as both a searchable database and a digital archive of all print editions; the database won the AALL Best New Product Award in 2009! William S. Hein & Co., Inc. has now taken over publication of the print product effective with the new 2014-2015 edition. The new edition includes the most up-to-date bibliographic records, many of which contain extensive annotations. The database provides direct links to articles and other documents available in HeinOnline and elsewhere on the web.

The Subject Compilations of State Laws database can be browsed or searched. Select the collection from the HeinOnline Welcome Page, and browse the subjects or the full print run:

Hundreds of subject headings include Abandoned Property, Child Support, Fair Housing, Racial Discrimination, and more. Clicking on any subject reveals all relevant bibliographic records in the database:

The bibliographic records provide information about each title, related subjects, and links to content when available via HeinOnline or on the web. Many online sources have been archived at Perma.cc, and the Perma URL for these sources appears in the record. The records even link to the specific pages within each article where the state law survey is found. For example, this article is available in the Law Journal Library:

The database is also fully searchable using metadata fields such as keywords, subject, article title, and more. Use the optional checkbox to display only results available in HeinOnline periodicals:

For instance, a keyword search for the phrase "animal welfare" produces results related to animal law and animal cruelty:

Browse the Other Related Works subcollection for monographs and sets of material related to state legislation, such as Abortion in the United States: A Compilation of State Legislation by Igor Kavass and Tobe Liebert. This subcollection also features PDF images of court briefs, federal and state government publications, a section of external links to 50-state surveys and other related sites, as well as its own quick reference guide.
