Millennials Are Changing the World: Don’t @ Me

3 MIN READ

Triggering Change

The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines millennials as those born roughly between the 1980s and 1990s. Also known as Generation Y, this demographic cohort is most known for their use and familiarity with communications, media, and digital technologies. In relation to older generations, millennials tend to support political correctness and have drawn attention to implementing “safe spaces” and “trigger warnings,” bringing changes to higher education.

This generation has also been referred to as the “Peter Pan generation.” Research shows they tend to delay certain rites of passage into adulthood for longer periods than most generations before them. Although they sometimes get a bad rap, let’s not forget some of the millennials who have impacted our everyday life. Mark Zuckerberg co-founded Facebook, the most powerful social media platform to exist, and has been named among the 100 wealthiest and most influential people in the world by Time magazine. Jessica Alba, the actress turned entrepreneur, created the Honest Company, which pushes ethical and non-toxic products. Their products were first distributed in Whole Foods stores, but now can be found at Target, Buy Buy Baby, and Nordstrom. John Zimmer is the co-founder and president of Lyft, a major competitor with the ride-sharing app Uber. Lyft can be found in approximately 300 U.S. cities and provides more than one million rides per day.

Millennials have also been characterized for their emphasis on work-life balance and social consciousness. Studies show they value a strong relationship with their supervisor and prefer immediate feedback. Understanding that the workplace may be shifting with this new generation, Ashley Krenelka Chase, Associate Director of the law library at Stetson University, compiled Millennial Leadership in Libraries, which includes contributions from thirty librarians. Chase noticed there was almost no literature about millennials in library leadership roles and decided to change that. In each chapter, a different author offers unique perspectives and insights applicable to the library world and other fields.

About Millennial Leadership in Libraries

Edited by Ashley Krenelka Chase, Millennial Leadership in Libraries is an informative guide for new millennial librarians and library administrators of all generations. Readers can learn about the impact of this generational shift in libraries involving budget, staffing, and collections. This book is not only important for millennial librarians to have a base of literature from which they can draw information, guidance, or inspiration, it is also important for librarians from other generations to understand what millennial librarians have to offer and how their entree into library leadership will affect the profession.

This one-of-a-kind resource was recently reviewed by Lora Johns, Faculty Services Librarian at Yale Law School, in the Law Library Journal.

“Whether a veteran manager seeking reassurance or advice on mentoring the next generation, or a budding Millennial leader seeking concrete guidance on how to build a meaningful and fulfilling career in the changing library landscape, Millennial Leadership in Libraries offers something of value for everyone who cares about librarianship’s future.”
Lara Johns, Law Library Journal
