HeinOnline continuously expands and enriches its databases with timely, authoritative content. We’re thrilled that the most comprehensive presidential collection available in digital format, the U.S. Presidential Library, just received a major update.
Since the beginning of 2025, we’ve added over 150 new presidential-related books, significantly enhancing the depth and breadth of this powerful research tool. Keep reading to take a look at this major expansion of executive history in HeinOnline.
What is the U.S. Presidential Library?
As the head of state and government, the President of the United States occupies one of the most powerful and scrutinized roles in America. While the Constitution’s original charge to the president has remained constant since 1789, the office itself has grown in power, complexity, and global consequence. Each individual who has stepped into the presidency has shaped the role according to the challenges of their era, leaving behind a legacy that reflects the shifting contours of American society, government, and international standing.
HeinOnline’s U.S. Presidential Library captures this remarkable evolution through an expansive, curated archive that invites researchers to explore the lives, policies, and historical significance of America’s chief executives. This specialized database includes more than 2,500 titles and over 1.2 million pages of primary sources documents and scholarly analysis. Also included in this database are featured subcollections that relate to the U.S. presidency, including the Electoral College, Executive Privilege Library, and U.S. Presidential Impeachment Library.
A Scholarly Foundation for This Expansion
These newly added titles were meticulously identified from a trusted scholarly source: Presidents of the United States—Their Written Measure: A Bibliography, a guide published in 1996 by the Library of Congress. The bibliography spans works by and about U.S. presidents from George Washington through Bill Clinton. Its selection criteria emphasize the use of primary sources, author authority, historical significance, accessibility, and enduring relevance, including classic authors whose works remain influential today.
Beyond presidential biographies, the bibliography features titles that illuminate the presidency itself, covering campaign strategies, political theory, and the institutional evolution of the office. As its subtitle Their Written Measure suggests, the bibliography prioritizes the “written and spoken words of presidents” as a means of understanding both the public and private dimensions of executive leadership. This guiding framework helped us bring this expansion of historically rich titles to HeinOnline users so researchers have new ways to explore how past presidents shaped, and were shaped by, the eras they lived in.
