Behind every groundbreaking article is a story. A question that kept someone awake. A challenge that demanded answers. Legal scholarship begins with curiosity, but its influence stretches far beyond the page. It shapes courts, guides policymakers, and ignites the next generation of legal thinkers.
Yet for all its impact, understanding who drives these conversations has been difficult. Scholarship covers a lot of ground, and most tools only show a small part of the picture. They often miss the context and comparisons that help reveal real influence.
That’s why HeinOnline created Scholarly Impact Rankings: to offer a clearer, fuller view of scholarly influence, one that reflects both the reach of the ideas and the people behind them.

A Decade of Work Coming to Life
Before we look at how the rankings work, it helps to understand how they came to be and why now. Nearly a decade ago, U.S. News & World Report approached HeinOnline about powering a national scholarly-impact ranking using our citation data. Even then, it was clear that the legal community needed a deeper, more transparent way to understand influence, something rooted not in reputation or popularity, but in evidence.
What followed was years of quiet, meticulous work.
Our teams have spent countless hours:
- Cleaning and refining author data
- Improving citation capture and matching
- Expanding subject classifications
- Enhancing ScholarCheck and Author Profile analytics
Each improvement made the data clearer. We started to see patterns, stronger connections, and a fuller picture of legal scholarship.
Eventually, we realized that what we had built wasn’t just a dataset. It became clear that what we had built could support something far more meaningful.
What Are Scholarly Impact Rankings?
Built entirely on HeinOnline’s vast multidisciplinary journal collection, Scholarly Impact Rankings offers nearly 60 unique ranking lists across two major categories.

ABA-Approved Law School Rankings
- Most-Cited Authors
- Most-Cited Authors by Subject
- Most-Cited Flagship Journals
- Most-Cited Institutions by Author Affiliation
- Most-Cited Institutions by Subject

Comprehensive Rankings
- Most-Cited Articles
- Most-Cited Authors
- Most-Cited Authors by Subject
- Most-Cited Journals (U.S. & Non-U.S.)
- Most-Recently Accessed Authors (past 12 months)
Note: To appear in the ABA-Approved Law Schools ranking category, authors must have an enhanced Author Profile Page with a verified affiliation to an ABA-accredited institution. Basic profiles are automatically created for all authors in HeinOnline, but institutional affiliations are added only through enhancement.
ABA-Approved Law Schools Rankings are designed for institutions, administrators, and anyone evaluating faculty impact within the ABA community.
The Comprehensive Rankings offer a wider, global look at scholarly influence, covering all authors and institutions represented in HeinOnline.

A Methodology You Can Trust and See
Scholarly influence is not one-size-fits-all. Leadership in Environmental Law looks different from leadership in Health Law, Constitutional Law, or International Law. - Administrative Law
- Business and Corporations
- Constitutional Law
- Contracts
- Courts and Jurisprudence
- Criminal Law and Justice
- Economics and Taxation
- Education
- Environmental Law
- Estates and Trusts
- Evidence
- Food and Drug Law

- Allows subscribers to download CSVs for offline analysis
- Links directly to Author Profile pages, journals, and individual articles
Data You Can Rely On
A ranking system is only as trustworthy as the data behind it. HeinOnline built Scholarly Impact Rankings with accuracy, consistency, and continuous refinement.
Each month, with every HeinOnline content release:
- Every citation is fully recounted
- All metrics are reindexed
- All lists are refreshed
This monthly recalculation ensures you’re seeing influence as it stands today, not outdated snapshots.
Maintaining that level of accuracy requires ongoing attention. HeinOnline’s quality control process includes:
- Continuous updates submitted by librarians
- Annual summer reviews of all author affiliations
- Author-driven edits made directly through their HeinOnline Author Profile pages
These updates help make sure the rankings reflect current scholarship, including what scholars write about and where they publish and teach. The data stays fresh, reliable, and connected to the academic world as it is now.
