We're Filling the Gap in the CFR in HeinOnline!

Many of you have been asking what our plan is to fill the gap in the CFR in HeinOnline. Therefore, we wanted to take a moment to share our plans with all of you. We are currently working on completing the gap from 1989-2001. One year of CFR is being added to HeinOnline each month. We are alternating between updating the beginning and the end of the gap each month. For example, in August we are adding 2001 to HeinOnline. In September, we will go back and add 1989. Once this gap is closed, we will have completed the CFR and will contain the complete CFR in HeinOnline.

Are you looking for the CFR Index and Finding Aids for a specific year, but not sure where to find it? This tip should help you get started as we explain how to browse to the Index and Finding Aids and how to search for them from a specific year.

First, let’s look at where to find the CFR Index and Finding Aids by browsing to them. Click on the Resources tab from within the CFR Library, and then click Browse by Bindings. Click on the year you wish to look across. You will find the link to the Index and Finding Aids displayed at the top or the bottom of the list. A Code of Federal Regulations Quick Reference Guide is now available in HeinOnline. This guide outlines the various options available for navigating this collection, from browsing to using the Title and Part Quick Locator, to searching for specific variables. If you often find yourself looking for a specific section of a part, check out the various search examples in the guide.

This guide can be accessed from the Educational Resources page or by clicking on the Resources tab inside the CFR library and then clicking on the link under the Help & Training section.

Federal Register Citation Navigator Added to the CFR Library

When researching in or browsing the Code of Federal Regulations, you may often come across citations to the Federal Register and want to link directly to the citation in the Federal Register. We’ve added an additional tool inside the Code of Federal Regulations library in HeinOnline to make it easy for you to navigate to a page in the Federal Register. This means you will now have two different methods for retrieving or linking to the page from within the CFR.

Coming Soon! Comprehensive Coverage of Title 37: Patents, Trademarks, and Copyrights in the CFR

At the beginning of April, Title 37: Patents, Trademarks, and Copyrights of the Code of Federal Regulations will be available in it’s entirety, from inception to date. With the back fill of content from 1987-2003 coming to completion, Intellectual Property research will be even more extensive and substantial in HeinOnline.

When researching in the CFR, don’t forget to use the “Citations on Page” option to link directly to any Federal Register citations that appear on the page and are identifiable in HeinOnline.

HeinOnline's Tip of the Week: Searching for a Section in the CFR

When looking for a section of the CFR, it is best to gather as much information about the section as you can before you begin. For example, knowing the year, title number or name, issuing agency, part name or regulatory area, subpart name or knowing one or several keywords would be beneficial in narrowing the search results. In the below example, we will will begin our search at a high-level by searching for only the section number. We will then add additional terms to the query to illustrate how best to refine the results.
