Commentaries on the Laws of Virginia

Coverage: 2 v. Richmond: Shepherd and Colin, 1846.

Additional Information: "Henry St. George Tucker (1780-1848) was a representative from Virginia to the 15th and 16th United States Congresses, and later served as president of the Virginia Court of Appeals and as a law professor of the University of Virginia. He stated in his introductory lecture that he used William Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England as the framework for this work." (2 Morris L. Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 252(1998))

Tucker's two-volume work established the standard for American treatise writing, and helped organize American law. This work served as the primary reference source for the Bar of Virginia as well as for many in the rest of the country until 1850, and was considered the most valuable text for students and lawyers in much of the South until the Civil War.
