Additional Information for Mississippi Law Journal
An important set of volumes in law libraries throughout the nation is the University of Mississippi School of Law's student-published Mississippi Law Journal, a point of pride for law students and a time-proven service to the legal community. The first Journal rolled off the press in July 1928, under the leadership of Dean Thomas C. Kimbrough in an agreement with the Mississippi Bar Association. When Dean Kimbrough was installed as the Association's president the following year, a strong relationship between the law school and the bar was cemented and continues today. While service to the legal community and dedication to the goals and purpose of the Journal are personally rewarding to student members, they do not subject themselves to the rigorous lifestyle that membership commands just for the benefit of others. Their ability to work under the Journal's demanding conditions makes them more attractive to employers. Because Journal members' work must be error-free, a month-long competition culls candidates until only those students who can meet the high standards remain. Candidates for membership must be second-year students with at least a 2.8 grade-point average. Those who pass the preliminary rounds move to the case note competition. In this final round, contenders write a 30- to 40-page discussion of a recent court decision. From these competitions, the best writers (usually less than 15 percent of each class) are selected to be members of the staff. The Journal is published three times each year and usually consists of 300 to 400 pages. It is a scholarly publication that runs articles by practitioners, judges, and professors, as well as student-written comments and case notes. Each piece published is selected on the basis of excellence and topical interest.
