Scholarly Impact Rankings

A Data-Driven View of Legal Scholarship

HeinOnline’s Scholarly Impact Rankings shine a spotlight on the most influential authors, journals, and institutions in legal research. Built on HeinOnline’s full collection of multidisciplinary journals, these rankings provide a transparent, comprehensive, and continually evolving view of who is shaping today’s legal discourse.

Unlike traditional ranking systems that focus only on law professors, HeinOnline’s approach recognizes the impact of practitioners, judges, policy experts, and other contributors whose published scholarship meaningfully influences the field. The result is a broader, more accurate representation of scholarly impact.

Scholarly Impact Rankings are included at no additional cost for all HeinOnline subscribers and are seamlessly integrated into the Law Journal Library, HeinOnline’s flagship collection. Not a subscriber but still want to explore the rankings? A public view is also available, allowing anyone to browse select rankings without needing a HeinOnline login.

About Scholarly Impact Rankings

Scholarly Impact Rankings reflect a citation-based metric system developed uniquely by HeinOnline. Every month, as part of HeinOnline’s content release, all citations are fully recounted and reindexed, ensuring that these rankings always reflect the most current publishing activity and citation patterns across the database.

Each ranking:

  • Includes 100 entries
  • Uses a fully transparent, published methodology
  • Provides interactive data tables
  • Allows sorting by h-index, h5-index, citation counts, access counts, and more
  • Provides CSV downloads for offline analysis (subscribers only)
  • Links to HeinOnline author profile pages, journal titles, and articles (subscribers only)

These rankings empower users to benchmark performance, identify leading voices, track emerging scholars, and better understand the evolving landscape of legal scholarship.

Available Rankings

Nearly 60 distinct ranking lists are available across two major categories:

ABA-Approved Law Schools

These rankings evaluate authors and institutions affiliated with ABA-accredited law schools.

  • Most-Cited Authors
  • Most-Cited Authors by Subject
  • Most-Cited Flagship Journal
  • Most-Cited Institutions by Author Affiliation
  • Most-Cited Institutions by Subject
Comprehensive Rankings

These rankings extend across all journals within HeinOnline’s Law Journal Library.

  • Most-Cited Articles
  • Most-Cited Authors
  • Most-Cited Authors by Subject
  • Most-Cited Journals (U.S.)
  • Most-Cited Journals (Non-U.S.)
  • Most-Recently Accessed Authors (past 12 months)

To appear in the ABA-Approved Law Schools ranking category, authors must have an enhanced Author Profile Page with a verified affiliation to an ABA-accredited institution. Basic profiles are created automatically for any author in HeinOnline, but institutional affiliations are only added through enhancement.

Authors or their representatives can request an enhancement, such as adding an affiliation, photo, or biography, to ensure their work is accurately represented in the ABA rankings. A HeinOnline Support representative will update the profile based on the information provided.
