About Us

A Century of Serving the Library Community

William S. Hein & Co., Inc. is a leading, family-run publishing company that has been serving the worldwide library community since the 1920s. Originally a renowned publisher of legal publications, the company has since expanded its services into academic, public, government, and corporate libraries, becoming a highly respected multidisciplinary publisher in multiple sectors.

Since the formation of William S. Hein & Co., Inc., the company has kept an ear to the ground in responding directly to the needs of the law library community. From printing out-of-print journals and publications in the 1960s, to launching a microform service in the 1970s, to establishing a true-to-print online research database in 2000, the Hein Company has stayed ahead of the curve by keeping close relationships with its customers and providing them with the tools they need to make research easier.

A GROWTH-MINDSET

Since 2000, HeinOnline has grown from a small database with 25 law journals, to a multidisciplinary publishing powerhouse that holds more than 233 million pages of content that spans journals, case law, government documents, books, and much more. Its products have won various prestigious awards from the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL). Now containing more than 100 databases, it has adapted artificial intelligence tools that elevate the research experience and increase discoverability.

But at the heart of it all remains a commitment to building trusting, productive relationships with its customers to create the most innovative and user-responsive product. As a small, family-owned business, the Hein Company maintains the flexibility and creativity needed to respond and adapt to the ever-changing needs of libraries around the world.

The History of Hein

Today, HeinOnline contains more than 100 databases, more than 230 million pages, and subscribers in more than 175 countries around the world. However, the Hein Company didn’t get to this point in a day. It traces its roots back to the 1920s—but its commitment to serving the library community’s needs and providing top-tier customer service as a multidisciplinary publisher has remained the same over the decades.
