The Iran nuclear deal, formally called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action ("JCPOA"), between Iran and world powers known as the P5+1 (U.S., U.K., Russia, France, China, and Germany (+1)) was announced on July 14, 2015, after lengthy and difficult negotiations. Under the agreement, Iran agreed to forgo nuclear weapons development in return for the phased lifting of crippling economic sanctions. Even before the agreement was announced, a nuclear Iran was one of the most controversial political issues in American politics. Seeking a voice in any future agreement, in May 2015 Congress passed, and President Obama signed, the Iran Nuclear Agreement Act of 2015, which gave Congress the right to review any agreement reached at the P5+1 talks. This compilation by William H. Manz includes the text and legislative history documents for the Iran Nuclear Agreement Act of 2015 and the subsequent efforts by congressional opponents to block the ability of President Obama to lift sanctions against Iran. Also included are congressional hearings on the issue of a nuclear Iran published between 2005 and 2016 and Congressional Research Service Reports issued from 2015 and 2016.
