Subjects: DICTIONARIES, LEGAL HISTORY

Reprint of the fifth edition, which was the last publishedduring the author's lifetime. As Cowley pointed out, the NewLaw-Dictionary (first edition, 1729) was both Jacob'smasterpiece and "an entirely new departure in legalliterature" that provided a model for several subsequentefforts. In contrast to earlier works, each entrysummarizes all of the laws relating to the subject andoffers extensive interpretive commentary. Jacob was alsocareful to omit obsolete terms. It was recognized almostimmediately that Jacob had created a highly useful legalencyclopedia that was both more detailed and concise thanany other abridgment of the period. An extremely popularwork that went through twelve editions by 1800, it offersunparalleled insights. Reprinted by Lawbook Exchange,Ltd. Distributed by William S. Hein & Co., Inc.
