This is a reprint of the final authorial edition publishedin Philadelphia during Adam's (1735-1826) presidency. Hisimportant defense of the Constitution played an importantrole in the development of American political theory. Hecalls for a doctrine of the separation of powers, a systemof checks and balances, and a legislature of two houses. Thework's timely publication and thesis influenced thedelegates to the Constitutional Convention of 1787. Writtenand originally published in 1787 while Adams was serving atthe Court of King James.
