Upon his appointment as Archdeacon of St. Alban's, WilliamHale found that his duties included giving orders to thechurchwardens for the repair and embellishment of parishchurches, but he also found that the laws to enforce hisorders and collect the necessary funds were unclear. Therefore, he undertook a two-year assessment of the recordsof several Ecclesiastical Courts to clarify the Courts'legal position and publish his work. Hale notes in thePreface that this became necessary when parishioners beganto no longer willingly pay the rates that they wereassessed. "The station to which I had been called made mefeel deeply interested in the solution to the question, 'Howcould parishioners be compelled to repair their churches?'"Hale noted. The work attempts to answer this question andincludes an interesting alphabetical Analytical Index.
