Second edition. The Court of Star Chamber was established bythe Crown in 1487 to try offences dealing with the safety ofthe state before a council. Its scope expanded over time toinclude a wider array of criminal matters and a limitednumber of civil matters, such as suits between corporationsand prize cases. In its final years the court was infamousfor cruelty, arbitrary nature and illegal extensions ofpower. It was abolished in 1641. Crompton's L'Authoritie etIurisdiction des Courts de la Maiestie de la Roygne (1594)is one of the best sources we have today about the courtsystem of his day.
