ORDER OF SERJEANTS AT LAW, 1383-1875

Baker, Dr. J.H.

Item #: 68183

Series: SELDEN SOCIETY SUPPLEMENTARY SERIES

Previous lists of serjeants, such as Dugdale's, were basedsolely on the writs of summons, and this led toinaccuracies. The degree was conferred not by writ but bycorporeal ceremonies, the oldest of which may hold clues tothe origins of the Order of the Coif in the fourteenthcentury. The First Part lists recorded creation ceremoniesas noted in reports, diaries, chronicles, and theprothonotaries' remembrances, collated with the relevantpublic records. It gives precise dates of creation, lists ofpatrons, and a list of mottoes. The Second Part containsselect unpublished descriptions of creations, and texts ofthe speeches made to new serjeants. An introduction tracesthe history of the order in outline from the thirteenthcentury to 1921.
