The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act is thebiggest federal initiative against smoking since the 1971ban on radio and televison tobacco advertising. The Act isintended to meet the requirements set by the Supreme Courtruling in 2000, when it ruled in FDA v. Brown & WilliamsonTobacco Co. that the FDA could not regulate tobacco withoutcongressional approval. The Act easily passed both houses ofCongress with bipartisan support, and was quickly signedinto law by President Obama, who is himself an occasionalsmoker.
