The St. Louis Affair occurred a few months before the out-break of World War II. Because of the increased Nazi terrorlarger numbers of Jews had begun to emigrate. The CubanDirector of Immigration had sold many landing permits whole-sale to the Hamburg America Line, which resold these permitsto individual Jews. A shift in Cuban policies invalidatedthe permits, but the line failed to inform the passengers. Thus when over 900 passengers arrived on the St. Louis atHavana, they were prevented from disembarking and forced toreturn to Europe. For a moment, they were saved by theunselfish actions of France, Holland, Belgium and GreatBritain, which permitted the emigrants to land in theirrespective territories. Many of the documents selected forthis volume are devoted to the St. Louis Affair. Reprintedby Lawbook Exch. Ltd. Distributed by Wm. S. Hein & Co., Inc.
