Mary Surratt was the first woman tried and executed by theUnited States. She owned and ran a boardinghouse inWashington, D.C. where John Wilkes Booth and other conspira-tors in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln often met. Shewas tried and convicted of complicity in Abraham Lincoln'sassassination and hanged on July 7, 1865. Though currentscholarship indicates otherwise, many writers have portrayedher as an innocent victim of a vengeful military tribunalthat did not have the right to try her for her involvementin the assassination plot. This book discusses two eventsthat supported this view.Reprinted by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd.Distributed by William S. Hein & Co., Inc.
