Reprint of the first edition. In the Formative Era of American Law, Pound refers to the Commentaries on the Law of Bills of Exchange as one of the standard texts of the 19th century. As Marvin pointed out in 1847, it was certainly the most complete and wide ranging text of its day. Apart from James Kent, no man has had greater influence on American law than Joseph Story. He was Dane Professor of Law at Harvard and an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
