Notable for their conservatism, which became more pronouncedin subsequent publications, these lectures reflect ondevelopments in the international legal order during thelate 1940s. Pound detected three legal "paths", those ofliberty, humanitarianism and authoritarianism. The first, which he endorses, seeks to realize a maximum of freeindividual self assertion. Legal humanitarianism, which hecriticizes heavily, is the expansion of injury law toinclude social redress and consumer protection. Hisantipathy toward the authoritarian path goes beyond acomdemnation of authoritarian regimes like the Soviet Unionto a rejection of any form of social legislation, such associalized medicine or state-run pensions.Reprinted by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd.Distributed by William S.
