This work was the first general encyclopedia to emphasizescience, serving as a model for Ephraim Chambers'Cyclopaedia. It was named by Denis Diderot in his Prospectusof 1950 as a source for the great Encyclopedie. Harris livedduring one of the most important periods of scientificadvancement. He was able to recognize originality in othersand draw on their works in his lexicon. Relying upon thescientific research of his able contemporaries, Harriscreated the first encyclopedia acknowledged as "up to date,comprehensive and detailed on the subject of science.":Cited in L.E.
