The Manusmriti, or Laws of Manu, is an important statementof Hindu law. Attributed to Manu, the progenitor of humanityin Hindu theology, it was compiled in its final form around200 BCE. It is a collection of laws governing individuals, communities and nations and is an important (and somewhatcontroversial) source of information about the caste systemand the status of women. This work achieved its interna-tional prominence through Jones, the able judge of the HighCourt of Calcutta and brilliant linguist, who produced thefirst complete English translation. Jones was attracted tothis work because of its structural similarities to theInstitutes of Justinian.Reprinted by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd.Distributed by William S. Hein & Co., Inc.
