This popular guide was first published in 1761 and was latertranslated in German, Dutch, French and Italian. It appearedat a time when Great Britain was codifying its position asthe most sophisticated commercial empire in the world. Atthe time of the eleventh edition stock in the East IndiaCompany held an allure comparable to shares in internetstart-ups in the mid-1990s. As his lengthy sub-title titlesuggests, Mortimer was critical of brokers and hostiletoward speculators and jobbers. However, his detailed adviceoffers one of the best accounts of stock trading in thesecond half of the eighteenth century.
