One of the positive results of the Evian-les-BainsConference was the establishment of an IntergovernmentalCommittee on Political Refugees for the purpose of findingways to increase and facilitate emigration of Jews fromGermany and Austria. George Rublee, an official of the U.S.Department of State, headed the committee and conductednegotiations with Nazi government representatives includingHjalmar Schacht, the former Reichsbank president lateracquitted of war crimes at Nuernberg. They reached afinancial agreement which enabled a larger number of Jews toleave Nazi-controlled countries.
