About six weeks after the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union,Reichmarschall Hermann Goering ordered Reinhard Heydrich,Chief of the Security Police, to make preparations for a"total solution" of the Jewish question in Nazi-dominatedEurope. One of the results of this order was the conferenceAm Grossen Wannsee in Berlin on January 20, 1942. Members ofa number of German government agencies attended the meeting,at which the "Endloseung" or "Final Solution" was discussedand outlined. Hydrich proposed that with the aid of theagencies represented, the Jews were to be collected anddeported to the East. These discussions are summarized inthe Wannsee Protocol and related documents.
