Major factors contributing to theobscurity and, often, negativity towards certain justicesinclude: the fact that their holdings in the context oftoday's legal culture are politically incorrect;private law cases made up much of their docket; andsome significant contributions to the Court were made inways less tangible than opinion writing. Also, some justicesare obscure and held in low esteem because they trulysuffered from flamboyant ineptitude.
