CHILD CARE AND CHILD WELFARE: TWO REPORTS FROM THE GAO

The first investigation in this combination of twoGovernment Accountability Office reports was conductedbecause very little is known about sexual abuse amongchildren regularly cared for by the more than 1.3 millionchild care providers in the United States. This studyreviews federal and state laws pertaining to this topic andexamines several cases where convicted sexual offenders weresubsequently employed or present at child care facilities.The second report focuses on the relationship between thefoster care system and the corrections agencies whenchildren of incarcerated parents are in foster care. Thisreport also contains several GAO recommendations, includingimproving data on such children and promoting collaborationbetween agencies in facilitating communication between thesefoster children and their incarcerated parents.
