He became ChiefJustice of the Supreme Court in 1796. During his brieftenure, which ended in 1799 due to poor health, Ellsworthworked to expand the authority of the federal courts andextend common law procedures in appeals to equity andadmiralty cases. With limited success he tried to initiatethe policy of the Court's handing down per curiam opinionsfor the entire court rather than seriatim opinions byindividual justices.
