The Department of Defense has a long-standing policy aimedat providing an environment free of sexual harassment, andeach branch of the military has implemented its own policiesand programs. However, about 25 percent of active dutyservice members indicated that they did not know whethertheir immediate supervisor makes honest and reasonableefforts to stop sexual harassment. Furthermore, an estimated41 percent indicated that in their group, people would beable to get away with sexual harassment to some degree, evenif it were reported. Because sexual harassment canjeopardize the military's combat readiness and missionaccomplishment, the GAO surveyed active duty service membersand developed recommendations to improve the implementationand oversight of the DOD's policies and programs. This is anoverview of their findings.
