HeinOnline has partnered with Fastcase, a leading next-generation legal research service that features powerful “best-case-first” tools that make research faster than ever. This partnership offers HeinOnline subscribers access to a wide array of case law at the federal and state levels and enables HeinOnline users to access the full text of cases through their HeinOnline subscription without the hassle of using multiple research databases. HeinOnline’s U.S. Supreme Court Library includes the U.S. Reports, which contain the officially-published opinions of the U.S. Supreme Court, and are available from inception to current. There are two levels of access to Fastcase via HeinOnline: Fastcase Basic, which is included at no additional cost with all core HeinOnline subscriptions, and Fastcase Premium, which offers additional features such as the ability to search the full text of all Fastcase case law.

What is Fastcase?

As the smarter alternative for legal research, Fastcase democratizes the law, making it more accessible to more people. Using patented software that combines the best of legal research with the best of Web search, Fastcase helps busy users sift through the clutter, ranking the best cases first and enabling the re-sorting of results to find answers fast. Fastcase provides federal and state case law in an HTML format which can be downloaded to a PDF or printed.

The state case law covers all fifty states, with nearly half of the states dating back to the 1800s. Coverage for the remaining states dates back to approximately 1950.

Fastcase Basic

Fastcase Basic is included free of charge with all HeinOnline Core subscriptions and offers the ability to access case law via inline hyperlinks or by entering a case citation from the Fastcase tab on the HeinOnline Welcome Page or inside any HeinOnline library. Like HeinOnline’s “Citations on a Page” feature, case citations referenced in the text of any document in HeinOnline will link to the case in Fastcase. Links will be highlighted in blue, and clicking on the link will pull in the full text from Fastcase.

Fastcase Premium

If your institution subscribes to Fastcase, you can likely upgrade to Premium by synchronizing your institutional Fastcase account with HeinOnline. If you are not a Fastcase subscriber, you can upgrade to Fastcase Premium for an additional charge.

In addition to the standard features included with HeinOnline core subscriptions, several valuable enhancements are available by upgrading to Fastcase Premium.


  • Full-text and metadata searching of all case law
  • The “Bad Law Bot” negative treatment indicator will provide a full negative treatment analysis, including cases which post negative treatment to the case being viewed

Hein’s ScholarCheck tool helps users find related items both within HeinOnline and via Fastcase. Look for blue highlighted hyperlinks throughout HeinOnline to link among related documents. ScholarCheck also counts the number of times an article or case is cited by other articles or cases, or is accessed by other HeinOnline users within a rolling 12-month period.

Bad Law Bot

Fastcase’s Bad Law Bot tool displays a red flag when negative treatment has been posted to a case. Click the words “negative treatment indicated” next to any red flag for a list of cases that have overturned or reversed the case.

Canada Supreme Court Reports

This official bilingual series is published under the authority of the Supreme Court Act. This collection includes nearly 10,000 cases which include background information, statutes and regulations, authors cited, analysis and the decision.

Early American Case Law

This database includes the Federal Cases 30 book series (1894-1897) which contains more than 20,000 cases. Also included is the Trinity Series, which includes American Decisions, American Reports, and American State Reports.

English Reports

The English Reports delivers exact page images of the original bound reprint edition, containing more than 100,000 cases, together with the Indexes and Book of Charts. In addition, multiple navigation tools, such as Case Locator, Chart Tool, and an Advanced Search feature, enhance the ease of access to specific cases. Also included in this collection is the Statutes of the Realm (1235-1713), along with Pre-1865 Law Reports.
