Highlights from the Past Month

We Showcased HeinOnline’s Journals Library

When HeinOnline was initially launched, it contained just 23 law journals. Even though our research platform has expanded to include government documents, international resources, case law, and more, our journal content continues to be the most popular material accessed on a daily basis. In the last 12 months, the Law Journal Library received more than 120 million hits! In this post, we explored some more stats on the Law Journal Library, and why it’s considered the greatest of all Hein.

We Released the Final Issue of ABA’s Preview of United States Supreme Court Cases

The American Bar Association released its final issue of Preview of United States Supreme Court Cases for the 2021-2022 SCOTUS term, and it’s now live in HeinOnline! This unique publication provides comprehensive expert analysis of all cases argued before the Supreme Court prior to the arguments. Issues 1-7 summarize the Court’s seven argument sessions from October through April and Issue 8 reviews the entire term using statistics, charts, essays, and case summaries. Be sure to subscribe to our Preview database so you can be in the know for the upcoming 2022-2023 term!

We Rounded Up the Latest Supreme Court Rulings

The Supreme Court was certainly busy during the last month of its 2021-2022 term. Several major decisions, many of which went against Court precedents, shocked Americans across the political spectrum. It’s easy to research these cases in HeinOnline, where we have several databases dedicated to case law. This post includes a summary of some of the most notorious cases decided in June, as well as additional resources that you can check out in HeinOnline.

We Dove into a Cool Coca-Cola Trademark Case Law Title

When we saw a tweet about a title called Coca-Cola Company: Opinions, Orders, Injunctions, and Decrees Relating to Unfair Competition and Infringement of Trade-mark, we had to figure out if it was in HeinOnline. Turns out we had Volume 1 in our Intellectual Property Law Collection and World Trials Library. But after checking in with our friends over at the University of Georgia’s law library, we learned that there were two other additional volumes of this title published by Coca-Cola in 1939. So, we borrowed the books from the University at Buffalo, scanned them into our system, and voila—they went live with our July content release. Read more about it in this post.

We Added a CRS Report on the Protection of Classified Information

Days after the FBI seized 11 sets of classified documents in a raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, Trump and his allies are claiming that he had a “standing order” to declassify documents removed from the Oval Office. What does the law say about the protection of classified information? A Congressional Research Service report, just issued on August 12, 2022, includes all the details.

We Updated the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas Database with Important Titles

In true Hein fashion, we are constantly increasing the value of your subscription by adding new content each month. In the last 12 months alone, we’ve added nearly 800,000 pages from more than 700 new titles to the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas: History, Culture & Law database. This month, we are pleased to announce that we’ve added two important publications from the Native Nations Law & Policy Center.

We Summarized the Trials of Deshaun Watson

Cleveland Brown’s backup quarterback, Jacoby Brissett, will be starting this NFL season as a fill-in for three-time Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson during his 11-game suspension following a settlement between the NFL and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), announced last Thursday. This settlement came after an investigation stemming from a sexual misconduct lawsuit filed in March 2021, which set in motion more than two dozen women coming forward with similar accusations.

We Uncovered the Drama Behind Aaron Burr’s Conspiracy

With former president Donald Trump currently under investigation for keeping classified documents from his presidency in his Mar-a-Lago home, you might wonder if a major American politician has ever been suspected of conspiring against the United States before. Well, it isn’t exactly unprecedented: Aaron Burr, vice president to Thomas Jefferson and infamously known as the man who killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel, was charged with treason in 1807. Though found not guilty, Burr’s actions and the subsequent trial ruined his political career and reputation. We dive into the drama in this month’s Secrets of the Serial Set edition.

We Explored the History of Historic Preservation

In 1963, to the horror of historians and New Yorkers, the original Pennsylvania Station was demolished. Its original sculpture-adorned concourses were heavily renovated into the modern Penn Station, which no human being has ever considered an aesthetic masterpiece. In direct response to Penn Station’s demise, New York City enacted its Landmark Preservation Law in 1965. The following year, Congress would enact its most comprehensive federal historic preservation law. Before 1966, historic preservation was mostly done by private citizens, not the federal government.
